Lawn Mower FAQs
Which size mower do I actually need?
It mostly comes down to how much ground you need to cover. To give you a head start, a standard tennis court is about 260m². Here’s how we usually break it down:
-
Small Gardens (Up to 150m²): This is your typical urban or terrace garden (roughly half a tennis court or less). You’ll want a compact mower with a 30cm–34cm cutting width. They’re light, easy to store in a small shed, and nimble enough to get around flower beds.
-
Medium Gardens (150m² – 300m²): This covers the average UK family garden (around the size of a tennis court). A mower with a 35cm–42cm cutting width is the sweet spot here. This is also where you might consider a self-propelled model so the mower does the heavy pushing for you.
-
Large Gardens (300m² – 600m²): If you’ve got a more substantial plot (1.5 to 2 tennis courts), you’ll want something with a bit more reach—usually a 46cm–51cm cutting width. At this size, a wider ‘deck’ means fewer passes and more time back in your weekend.
-
Acreage (600m²+): Once you get past this point, you’re looking at our Ride-On Mowers or high-capacity petrol mowers to keep the job manageable.
Petrol vs. Cordless Battery: Which is better in 2026?
There’s no right or wrong answer here; it’s all about your lifestyle.
-
Go Petrol if… You have a very large area, thick or “wild” grass, or if you simply enjoy the traditional feel of a powerful engine. They’re built like tanks and, if looked after by a team like ours, will last for decades.
-
Go Cordless if… You want a quiet life! Modern battery tech (like the STIGA ePower or STIHL AP system) is now a genuine rival to petrol. They start at the push of a button, require almost zero engine maintenance, and you won’t have to worry about storing jerry cans of fuel in the garage.
Can I mow my lawn when the grass is wet?
We’d usually say: “If you can wait, do.” Cutting wet grass is a bit of a headache for any mower – it tends to clump together, which can clog up the deck and leave your lawn looking a bit patchy. It also puts more strain on the motor. If you absolutely have to mow, raise the cutting height to its highest setting to give the machine an easier time.
How often should I get my mower serviced?
Think of it like a car—a little TLC once a year goes a long way. We usually recommend an Annual Winter Service. Bringing your mower into our workshop at the end of the season means we can sharpen the blades, change the oil, and check the filters while the garden is dormant. That way, when the first warm Saturday of spring hits, your mower is ready to go exactly when you are.
