Chainsaw FAQs
What fuel should I use in my petrol Stihl chainsaw?
Stihl petrol engines require a mix of high-quality unleaded petrol and 2-stroke engine oil (usually at a 50:1 ratio). For the best performance and to protect your engine from ethanol damage, we highly recommend Stihl MotoMix—a premixed, alkylate fuel that stays fresh for up to five years.
How often should I sharpen my chainsaw chain?
A good rule of thumb is to sharpen the chain every time you refuel (petrol) or swap a battery. If you notice the saw is producing fine “sawdust” instead of distinct wood chips, or if you have to push down hard to make a cut, it’s definitely time for a sharpen.
Can I use my Stihl battery in other tools?
Yes! This is one of the best features of the Stihl range. If you buy a battery for your chainsaw, it will usually be compatible with Stihl leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, and lawnmowers within the same system (e.g., the AK System for homeowners or the AP System for professionals).
How should I store my chainsaw over the winter?
If you have a petrol saw, empty the fuel tank and run the engine until it stops to ensure no fuel is left in the carburettor (which can get “gummy” over time). For battery models, store the battery at around 40-60% charge in a cool, dry place.
